Transition Resource Centre On January 11, 2006 the Mother of Red Nations Transition Resource Centre officially opened to the public. The centre is for women who have moved to Winnipeg.
“We help make the transition to Winnipeg easier, and help women get settled into the community through referrals,” said Westwind Evening, the Transition Resource Centre for Mother of Red Nations.
The Transition Resource Centre offers a variety of services for women. They are: referrals, application forms for housing, and other information which helps them access resources in the community. A computer will be set up in the centre for clients to utilize.
The centre also advocates on behalf of women with issues in dealing with social systems such as housing, income assistance and child welfare. They also write letters of support for clients who need it.
“We just wrapped up a series of workshops,” said Westwind, “They were, ‘Know Your Rights’ on ‘Housing,’ ‘Income Assistance’, and ‘Child Welfare’.
All three workshops were well received with 15 participants attending each workshop. Westwind said, “We would like to offer more workshops in the ‘Know Your Rights’ series in the future, however, it is dependant on funding.”
Since the official opening in January, there was a huge response not only from the community, but from the clients as well. “Clientele has increased since January,” noted Westwind adding, “We try not to do for them, what they can do for themselves.”
